My father enrolled me in a guitar class when I was a twelve year old in the Philippines. I played guitar for prayer services, a high school folk singing group and an all-guitar chamber quintet. Since then I have always owned a guitar that I would somehow end up giving to someone else. During a period of austerity in Venezuela, I met Nitya Prema who lent me her mandolin. That encounter introduced me to the world of South American songs of liberation. Through cantos revolucionarios, I started to understand the history of the people I left behind. I acquired other guitars along the way, the last one of which now lives in France with Celine. Today I live in New York City with my husband who is a pianist. Our children travel the world with mandolin, guitar, violin and voice. At home with me are Lola, my Spanish classical guitar, and Leila my steel-string acoustic guitar.  We make music when we are not chanting Torah or singing songs of resistance.
